Bidets are a new thing in American toilets.
And their popularity has increased exponentially in the last decade.
I remember buying my first bidet in the year 2014 and since then I have used all kinds of bidets.
But for someone who has never used a bidet or is new to the bidets have all sorts of questions.
And once such question that I frequently encounter is: Are bidets gross?
And in this post, I am going to answer the question by sharing some of my experiences.
So let’s jump right into it.
Are Bidet Gross
I have been using bidets for 8 years and in my personal experience, I don’t find bidets gross. In fact, I think a bidet is much better than toilet paper in terms of cleanliness and hygiene. But sometimes, bidets can be gross, especially if they’re not maintained well. Factors that influence bidet sanitation include how often the bidet is cleaned, whether it has self-sanitizing nozzles, and how much the bidet is shared.
Let’s first see why I think bidets are a better cleaning option and then we will see the factors that could make the bidets cross.
➤ Bidets Clean Better Than Toilet Paper
Let’s finally accept it.
No toilet can clean better than water and I really mean it.
I used to use a lot of toilet paper before I installed a bidet in my toilet. I used to use at least 8 sheets of toilet paper and still felt like I needed to wipe more.
If you too use toilet paper to clean yourself, you know how it feels to hold a pile of dirt toilet paper in your hands.
Actually, that is something that is gross.
With my bidet, I rarely use more than 2 toilet paper per visit to the toilet.
Plus water spray is strong enough to clean completely.
➤ Using Toilet paper is messy when loose motion
If you have ever suffered from loose motion, you know the hassle of going to the toilet.
When you have diarrhea, your bowel movements (or stools) are loose and watery. Plus the stool splashes around the butt and even on the toilet seat.
And cleaning, once you are done, is really messy.
In that case, a bidet does great work of cleaning your butt with water.
The water cleans your butt without you needing your hand to clean yourself.
When Bidet Can Be Gross
But bidets have some problems too.
They can be gross if they are not properly cleaned and maintained. The bidet sanitation can be influenced by many factors like leaking water, frequency of cleaning bidet, nozzle sanitation, etc.
In this section, I am going to discuss some of the criteria you need to know about bidet sanitation.
❌ Leaking bidet
A leaking bidet can make it really messy to use a toilet.
Once the tip of my handheld bidet started leaking. I must say it was a very messy situation.
The water kept coming out of it and the floor was wet all the time.
So I had to call a plumber to fix it for me.
So if you plan to get yourself a bidet, do know that such incidents can occur sometimes.
❌ Depends On The Bidets Type
Well, I found that using a handheld bidet is more chaotic than using a bidet toilet seat or washlet.
Simply because with handheld bidets you need to hold the sprayer and spray water at your bum by yourself.
And while doing so you can get water sprayed on your pants or underwear.
Bidet toilet seats don’t have such a problem.
They have an inbuilt nozzle that throws water on your bum, so you just have to turn on the water sprayer and adjust yourself so that water hits the desired spot.
❌ Bidet Water Pressure
Bidet cleanliness depends on the water pressure. If the bidet sprays water at too high pressure then not only it is uncomfortable to use, but it also splashes out water on the toilet seat and on the floor.
So, it is important that you know how to operate your bidet and with what pressure it throws water.

I hope that you understood that a bidet isn’t gross by itself but it all depends on the way that you use it.
If you regularly clean the bidets and check for any water leakings and pressure issues, then there is no better butt cleaning option than a bidet.
